Spun stories
SPUN: True Stories Told in the Territory is a live storytelling event showcasing the extraordinary people in the Top End and their even more amazing stories. As a story producer, I was privileged to work with a huge variety of people to draw out their experiences and help prepare them for the stage. Here are a some of my favourites.
Long Drive to Love - Nick and Week
Weed was working on the roads in Alice Springs when he first head Nick's voice down the line. Nick took the long way around to find love literally, driving half way round the country to meet Weed. They crossed paths at the perfect time. Nick and Weed told their very-Territory love story at Brown's Mart Theatre on 12 February 2016, at an event themed 'Chemistry'.
Surviving the Dungeon - Leah Potter
Leah Potter recently returned to her home town of Darwin and made waves in the community helping those in need. Before then, Leah's colourful life as a dominatrix led her round the country. This heartbreaking and heartwarming story has a powerful message, and was shares live on Friday 8 March 2019 at SPUN at the Michael Long Centre where the theme was ‘Backbone’.
When Crocodiles Attack - Christ Keeping
A born and bred Darwinite, Chris Keeping shares a very personal, spine tingling tale about his close encounter with one of nature's most aggressive killers. Chris is determined to not let his brush with a crocodile change his love of the ocean. This story was told at SPUN’s second event, held at Eva's Cafe, around the theme 'Going Troppo'.
Going Back to the Rock - Tarzan Jungle Queen
Tarzan Jungle Queen has lived in Darwin for more than half a decade but her family hail from rural New South Wales. In the 1950s, her grandfather, a gemstone enthusiast, set out on an adventure that would take him to the Olgas and see him pocket a rare treasure. More than 60 years later, Tarz discovers the same treasure and sets out on the same journey, guided by two mysterious photos. Tarz had a completely different story ready to share at the event on Friday 1 December 2017 at Darwin Festival, themed 'Rewind', but fate threw us in another direction a week before the event.
